Development Assessment Planner

Norfolk Island Regional Council is seeking a motivated and professionally minded Planner to join our Environment & Planning team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the sustainable development of one of Australia's most unique communities. Working within Council's statutory planning function, you will play a key role in assessing development applications, providing planning advice and supporting responsible growth that balances community needs, environmental values and legislative requirements. 

Key Responsibilities

• Assess development applications and planning matters in line with relevant legislation, Council policies, delegations and statutory timeframes.
• Prepare clear, accurate assessment reports, correspondence and recommendations to support consistent, defensible decisions.
• Undertake site inspections and support compliance activities using safe work practices and respectful stakeholder engagement.
• Provide timely, practical planning advice to applicants, residents, community members and internal stakeholders.
• Document stakeholder discussions and support senior officers during negotiations and integrated assessment processes.
• Maintain accurate assessment records, file notes, correspondence and decision documentation in Council systems.
• Contribute to planning policy, procedure, land use strategy and placemaking improvements.

• Exercise confidentiality, discretion and sound judgement when handling sensitive planning and property matters. 

About You 

You will bring a tertiary qualification in Urban and Regional Planning, Town Planning or a related discipline and prior experience in a planning role. You will have strong communication, analytical and organisational skills, with the ability to interpret plans, planning controls and supporting documentation with appropriate guidance and support. Eligibility for Planning Institute of Australia membership, and confidence using GIS, records management or development application systems will be highly regarded. A current Class C driving licence is essential.
