On 26 August 2026, Council resolved to merge the Audit, Risk and Improvement Committee (ARIC) with the Strategic Finance Improvement Committee (SFIC).
By merging these two committees, Council will enhance the internal financial oversight function of the ARIC.
The merged ARIC will continue to provide advice and guidance for the remaining term of administration and contribute to the prioritisation of activities that support the transition to a Norfolk Island Assembly.
The merger will also contribute to improved efficiency by reducing duplication and streamlining reporting and administration requirements.
The current members of ARIC retain their appointments. This includes three external independent members, Mr Tim Cronin (Chair), Ms Katie Sexton and Ms Kathy Campbell, together with Mr Gary Mottau, Financial Administrator, who serves as a non-voting independent member.
The membership of ARIC will be expanded through the appointment of two current and past members of SFIC, along with three additional members. All five appointees are members of the Norfolk Island community.
The now nine members of ARIC, will provide Council with expert advice on finance, governance and risk matters, as well as local knowledge, through to the conclusion of their membership terms on 31 December 2026.
‘Bringing together the expertise of the ARIC and SFIC will create a more integrated approach. This merger will also help ensure Council resources are used efficiently and effectively. Community knowledge and input are highly valued and play a vital role in supporting informed decision-making,’ the Lead Administrator, Mr Scott Mason, said.
‘A strong Audit, Risk and Improvement Committee is a key pillar of good governance. It provides independent advice and oversight that helps Council make informed decisions, manage risk effectively, strengthen accountability, and continuously improve the way we deliver services to the Norfolk Island community’, the Financial Administrator, Mr Gary Mottau, said.
