Help protect and restore Norfolk Island’s unique freshwater environments
Norfolk Island Regional Council is seeking a motivated and community-focused Waterway and Wetlands Project Officer to help deliver environmental projects that protect, restore and enhance the Island’s waterways, wetlands and catchments.
This is an exciting opportunity to play a hands-on role in improving water quality, supporting biodiversity, strengthening climate resilience and fostering community stewardship through practical environmental programs and partnerships. The position supports delivery of the Norfolk Island Waterway and Wetland Strategy 2026–2036 and works closely with landholders, community groups, government agencies, contractors and volunteers to achieve meaningful environmental outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate the delivery of waterway, wetland and catchment management projects.
- Plan and oversee on-ground restoration activities including revegetation, weed management, erosion control, habitat enhancement and rehabilitation works.
- Engage with landholders, community groups, volunteers, contractors and government agencies to support project delivery.
- Assist with environmental monitoring, data collection, site inspections and project reporting.
- Prepare project documentation, grant reporting, acquittals, briefing notes and communication materials.
- Support funding applications and help identify future environmental project opportunities.
- Maintain accurate records and ensure activities are delivered in accordance with Council policies and procedures
About You
You are a practical, community-minded environmental professional with a strong interest in protecting and restoring waterways, wetlands and catchments. You bring sound judgement, strong organisational skills and the ability to balance field work with project coordination, reporting and stakeholder engagement. A degree in environmental management, land management, biodiversity, natural resources, or a related discipline is essential. Experience in environmental restoration, revegetation, weed control, monitoring, mapping, grant-funded projects or volunteer coordination would be highly regarded.
