Acting Deputy General Manager
Location: Norfolk Island
Salary: Remuneration package in the region of $260,000 per annum
Contract Term: Full-time, 12 month contract (with possible extension)

Norfolk Island Regional Council is seeking an experienced Deputy General Manager (DGM) to support the General Manager in leading the Council’s day-to-day operations and delivering strategic, high-quality services to the community. This role provides broad leadership across multiple portfolios and plays a critical role in driving organisational performance, financial sustainability, and continuous improvement.
About the Role
Reporting to the General Manager, the Deputy General Manager provides executive leadership across key functions including service delivery agreements, planning and environment, waste and wastewater, human resources, asset management, telecommunications, and corporate financial management. The role works closely with Council, senior leaders, and external stakeholders to ensure services are delivered efficiently, compliantly, and in line with Council’s strategic objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide executive leadership across multiple operational and corporate portfolios
- Support the development and delivery of Council’s Corporate Plan and annual business plans
- Oversee financial management including budgeting, audits, investment reporting and financial performance
- Drive organisational performance, service improvement and cultural leadership
- Manage major projects, change initiatives and workforce matters
- Build strong relationships with Councillors, government agencies, funding bodies and the community
- Lead risk management, governance, and compliance across the organisation
About You
You are a highly capable senior leader with strong experience in local government or a comparable public sector environment. You bring:
- Proven executive leadership experience managing complex, multi-disciplinary teams
- Strong knowledge of governance, risk management, financial management and public administration
- Demonstrated success in budget development, financial oversight and audit processes
- Sound judgement and decision-making capability in complex and high-pressure environments
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills
- Tertiary qualifications in Business, Finance, Management or a related discipline (postgraduate qualifications desirable)
