Norfolk Island Regional Council has launched its Trainee and Apprentice program, with applications open until 18 August 2025.

The program aims to develop local talent for local jobs over the coming years in a limited term training program for young people on Norfolk Island.

Offering a flexible format, Council will consider traineeships and apprenticeships under the usual areas of business and administration, finance and mechanical, while also considering other areas not usually included in local government traineeship programs.

While this flexibility will be dependent on the level of interest, suitability of applicants and logistics of each role or work area, Council is excited to be able to provide this stepping stone towards further education or a career path, whether that’s continuing to work at NIRC or taking opportunities elsewhere.

The main areas that are being considered for traineeships or apprenticeships include

  • Business (potentially customer service, communication, human resources and general admin),
  • Finance (including accounts payable and receivable),
  • Mechanical (Cert III)
  • Environment and sustainability

Not all of these might be offered in the same year, as NIRC is very keen to put the right person in each of the roles.

Self-motivated people with a positive can-do attitude are encouraged to send in their resume, no matter how short that is, along with a cover letter that explains why they are suited to a particular role. If someone is interested in the program but has a strong and active interest in an area not mentioned above, for example waste management or digital communications, their application should include specific information that supports an alternative area of learning.

Depending on the response, and if Council resources for training are available in these other areas, opportunities exist outside of the usual business admin traineeships. We may also consider internships or school based traineeships, depending on the response.
