Extension of Public Exhibition Period - Draft Code of Meeting Practice

Published on 12 December 2025

Media Release

Norfolk Island Regional Council (Council) has announced an extension to the public exhibition period for the Draft Code of Meeting Practice, giving community members additional time to provide their feedback.

Originally scheduled to close on Thursday, 11 December 2025, the feedback period will now remain open until Friday, 23 January 2026.

A Code of Meeting Practice sets out the procedures and standards for council meetings. It is designed to make meetings open, accessible, and efficient, while maintaining dignity and order appropriate to democratic decision-making.

The period of public exhibition commenced on 30 October 2025 and to date, no public submissions have been received, however, three internal Council submissions were submitted.

Of note, Council is particularly interested in feedback from the community on the proposed change of commencement time of Ordinary Council Meetings from 2pm on a Wednesday, to 10am on a Wednesday.

Considerations regarding the change in time include:

  • 10am is a time the community is familiar with for government meetings, historically, the Norfolk Island Legislative Assembly meetings commenced at this time;
  • meetings will be more convenient for community members, so they do not have to sit until late in the evening for meetings to conclude;
  • aligns with current Radio Norfolk scheduling;
  • meetings are now live broadcast and streamed on Radio Norfolk and Council’s website;
  • the video recording remains on Council’s website for anyone to view at a time that is convenient to them.

The Code of Meeting Practice, with the suggested changes, is available on Council’s website, along with the three internal Council submissions. To view the documents and submit your feedback, please refer to the Public Exhibition page on Council’s website: nirc.gov.au/Your-council/Council-documents/Public-Exhibition.
