Household Expenditure Survey

Household Expenditure Survey

Norfolk Island Regional Council (NIRC) is running a Household Expenditure Survey (HES), launching 5 February 2024. The purpose of the survey is to enable the construction of an average Norfolk Island “basket of goods” which will be used for ongoing measurement of inflation on Norfolk Island.

The last time the Household Expenditure Survey was done on Norfolk Island was 2014 and the data needs to be updated as spending habits have changed. Most jurisdictions do a new Household Expenditure Survey every 5-7 years.

Data will be received anonymously and no individual responses will be available. The final weighted average “basket of goods” will be made public. The information asked for is collected under the authority of the Norfolk Island Retail Price Index Act 1983 (NI).

The survey process

The survey will be available online from 5 February and will include two components:

  • 5–11 February 2024: The expenditure diary (where you record daily expenditure items each day for one week)
  • 12–16 February 2024: The survey questionnaire, which asks questions about household characteristics and expenditure categories (e.g., food and beverages, transportation etc.).

Your cooperation is sought in completing the survey from 5 to 16 February and submitting it online. One person from each household who is over 18 years of age and responsible for the household members is requested to complete the two components of the survey.
